3 Mar
Summary
- Woman charged with murder after man's body found.
- Victim had prior conviction for assaulting the accused.
- Accused and victim had a long, on-again, off-again relationship.

Sandra Hunter, a 66-year-old Raleigh resident, appeared in Wake County court facing a first-degree murder charge. The accusation stems from the death of 72-year-old Arthur Upchurch, whose body was discovered on Basset Trail on Saturday morning. Upchurch had a criminal record including multiple assault convictions, with a recent indictment for striking Hunter and causing facial swelling.
Upchurch had pleaded guilty to assault on a female in December and was sentenced to 150 days in jail, with a court order prohibiting any contact with Hunter. Despite this, Hunter and Upchurch had maintained an on-again, off-again relationship for approximately 30 years. Hunter's defense attorney requested bond, highlighting Upchurch's past assaults against her, but she is currently being held without bond.
