Beloved Coach Found Dead; Boyfriend Charged

A respected Wake County teacher and coach, Sheremy Dillard, was found deceased in her home on Thursday, prompting a murder investigation and the subsequent arrest of her boyfriend, Rickey Harper. Police responded to a welfare check at her residence on Whistling Straits Way after family reported being unable to contact her. Investigators believe Dillard sustained injuries consistent with a stabbing.

Dillard, who served as the head girls basketball coach and a recovery teacher at Felton Grove High School in Apex, was deeply cherished by her students and colleagues. Her passing has prompted an outpouring of grief and tributes across social media, with many former students and athletes sharing how she profoundly influenced their lives.

Harper, who lived with Dillard, was not present when officers arrived. Detectives utilized evidence from the scene and Flock camera technology to identify him as a suspect. He was subsequently charged with first-degree murder. Approximately 24 hours after the initial discovery, Harper was taken into custody by the Plymouth Township Police Department in Montgomery County, Pennsylvania.

Community leaders and former colleagues have shared statements emphasizing Dillard's significant legacy. A spokesperson for Chapel Hill-Carrboro City Schools highlighted her "profound legacy of class, grace, wisdom and dedicated service" at Carrboro High School, where she previously coached. The school district plans to provide support resources for staff and students as they process this tragic loss.
