19 Aug
Summary
- Kundra spent 63 days in Arthur Road Jail after a 2021 arrest.
- He faced severe overcrowding and poor conditions in prison.
- Shilpa Shetty's unwavering support and trust aided his recovery.

Businessman Raj Kundra has reflected on his 2021 arrest and subsequent 63-day incarceration in Mumbai's Arthur Road Jail, describing it as a profoundly difficult period.
Kundra recounted learning of his arrest via an X post while at the police station for questioning, an event that came as a shock. He noted that his wife, Shilpa Shetty, initially learned of the situation through news reports, leaving her to manage the ensuing legal and business challenges.
He described the jail conditions as dire, with a cell meant for 50 people housing 250 inmates, leading to severe overcrowding and minimal space. The food quality was also extremely poor, forcing Kundra to subsist largely on biscuits and water, resulting in a significant weight loss of approximately 17-18 kg.
A particular challenge for Kundra was a rumor he heard in jail about Shetty planning to leave him, which deeply affected him. However, a subsequent phone call with his wife, where she expressed her unwavering trust and support, significantly boosted his morale.
Kundra stated that Shetty's reassurance provided him with immense courage, enabling him to face the situation with a renewed sense of determination. He now views his time in jail as a catalyst for a fresh start and a transition into acting, a long-held aspiration.
Kundra was arrested in July 2021 by the Mumbai Police Crime Branch in connection with an alleged pornography case. He was released on bail in September 2021 after spending approximately two months in custody. His legal team disputed claims of his active involvement in content creation.
