Summary
- Rideshare driver alleges racial discrimination by Queensland police.
- Officer recorded making racist comments about Indian people.
- Driver seeks $493,488 compensation for year-long prosecution.

A rideshare driver, identified as Singh, is pursuing legal action against Queensland police for alleged racial discrimination during a year-long investigation. The driver claims his requests for a translator and legal counsel were denied after he was charged with committing an indecent act in January 2023.
As officers departed the scene, one was recorded on a body-worn camera making derogatory remarks about Indian people, calling them "fucking Indians" and "a bunch of fucking perverts." These comments were later described as "racist" by the magistrate who heard the criminal case.
Singh is seeking $493,488 in compensation, alleging negligence and misfeasance in public office. Queensland police, in their defense, stated the recording was accidental and denied that any actions were motivated by the driver's race or national origin.
Further allegations include the refusal of interpreter services and a lawyer, alongside ignored requests to speak with his sister. The driver's legal team highlighted the emotional toll and the risk of deportation due to the prosecution costs. The indecent act charge was eventually dropped in early 2024.
