A Punjab Police constable has been sentenced to three years of imprisonment by the district court for molesting a minor. In addition to the jail term, the court imposed a Rs 10,000 fine on the convicted officer, who faced charges under the stringent sections of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act.
The case originated from a complaint filed on August 11, 2023, after the district child protection unit alerted authorities. The survivor recounted that in June 2022, while on an errand, she was subjected to attempted molestation by the off-duty constable who was consuming alcohol at the time. Despite her initial resistance and escape, the trauma lingered.
Her family later took her for treatment at the Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGI), where she confided in medical staff. This disclosure prompted the PGI to inform the child helpline, leading to a police investigation and the eventual arrest of the constable. The child helpline's counseling played a crucial role in encouraging the survivor and facilitating the case.
