A potential tragedy was averted on Saturday evening in Pune when three police officers took swift action to stop a stolen PMPML bus. Sub-inspectors Ajay Misal and Sandeep Patil, alongside police constable Ganesh Jadhav, were on duty near Good Luck Chowk when they noticed a PMPML bus driving erratically from the wrong direction.
Their suspicions grew when the bus mounted the traffic island and then proceeded towards Natraj Chowk. The officers initiated a chase, apprehending that the driver was not operating the bus normally. The driver, identified as being from Pauri Garhwal, Uttarakhand, had previously taken a spare bus and driven it for approximately 1.5 kilometers.
As the bus accelerated towards oncoming traffic, officers Jadhav and Misal managed to board it. With the driver panicking and pressing the accelerator, Patil and Jadhav used their hands to engage the brakes, successfully halting the vehicle. The driver was then apprehended with the help of citizens.
Authorities later admitted the driver to Sassoon General Hospital, where medical reports confirmed he was not under the influence of alcohol. Contacted, his mother stated he was her only child and had traveled to Mumbai seeking employment as a driver, expressing bewilderment over his presence and actions in Pune. Legal proceedings are underway after statements from the original bus driver are recorded.
