In a move to promote the reintegration of prisoners into society, the Yerawada Central Jail and Yerwada Women's Jail in Pune organized a "bandi galabhet" (prisoner-family meet) initiative on November 14th. The program, implemented under the guidance of senior police officials, aimed to alleviate the emotional stress experienced by inmates due to prolonged separation from their families, especially their children.
A total of 78 inmates, including 51 men from Yerawada Central Jail and 27 women from Yerwada Women's Jail, participated in the event. They were joined by 140 children and grandchildren, who had the opportunity to meet their incarcerated family members in person. The initiative, conducted in collaboration with Tata Trusts' Prayas and India Vision Foundation, was designed to deepen emotional connections and encourage positive behavioral change among the inmates.
Jail authorities emphasized that such programs are instrumental in building trust between inmates and the prison administration, reinforcing the department's core mandate of "reform and rehabilitation." The officer in charge affirmed that more such initiatives would continue to be rolled out across Maharashtra prisons to further support the emotional well-being and successful reintegration of inmates into society.
