Activist Attacked for Noise Pollution Stand

A Pune-based activist, Vidyanand Bapat, who has been vocal against the use of high-decibel DJ systems and loudspeakers during festivals, was reportedly assaulted on Thursday morning. The incident took place in the Tilak Road area as Bapat was giving an interview to media persons. A video circulating from the scene shows an individual slapping Bapat while he was speaking.

Police arrived at the location following the assault and escorted Bapat to safety in a police van. Authorities are currently working to identify the attacker and ascertain the motive behind the assault. Bapat's campaign against loud music and DJs during celebrations has gained significant traction across the state, evolving into an organized civic movement supported by many residents.

His advocacy stems from concerns about the adverse effects of excessive noise on residents' health and well-being. Bapat first gained public attention after advocating for a complete ban on amplified DJ music and loud speakers at a Pune Municipal Corporation preparatory meeting for the Ganesh festival. This stance led to a heated exchange with local Ganesh mandal representatives, resulting in him being escorted out by police amidst protests.
