A 34-year-old man, Josh Tarrant, died on his first night at HMP Elmley on the Isle of Sheppey, Kent, after being restrained by prison officers. Mr. Tarrant arrived at the facility on October 31 and suffered a cardiac arrest, leading to his death in the early hours of November 1. During his first night, Mr. Tarrant was restrained multiple times over a two-hour period as officers moved him between cells. Forensic pathologist Dr. Ginni Fitzpatrick-Swallow testified that the prolonged exertion during these restraints significantly contributed to his vulnerability and subsequent death from cocaine intoxication. She indicated that the duration and nature of the restraint, including struggling and falling, played a crucial role.
Mr. Tarrant had been charged with criminal damage, dangerous driving, assault, and robbery following a car crash in Sittingbourne on October 28. The inquest continues to examine the full circumstances surrounding his death.
