A prison officer, Jack Bentley, has been sentenced to two years and four months in prison for causing serious injury by dangerous driving. Bentley spent nearly two hours of a two-hour drive playing games and placing online bets on his phone. While driving at 71mph on the A50 in Foston, he crashed into the rear of a stationary vehicle.
The victim, who was 33 weeks pregnant and traveling with her partner and two children, was rushed to the hospital. She underwent an emergency C-section and suffered a broken pelvis. Due to the crash, she was unable to hold her premature baby for three weeks.
One child in the victim's car sustained a fractured ankle, and the family dog required emergency spinal surgery. Bentley pleaded guilty to two counts of causing serious injury by dangerous driving and received a three-year, two-month driving ban.
