Prison Leavers Face Deadly Post-Release Gap
13 Jul
Summary
- Prison leavers die more often within three months than over-75s yearly.
- Drug-related deaths are 40% of fatalities post-release.
- Post-release deaths increased significantly since pre-pandemic.

A recent study by the social justice charity Nacro has brought to light a significant increase in deaths among individuals shortly after their release from prison. The research indicates that prison leavers face a higher mortality rate within three months of release compared to individuals over the age of 75 in a full year. This trend has seen a substantial rise since the pre-pandemic period.
Drug-related deaths account for a concerning 40% of fatalities occurring within the year following release. The charity emphasizes that many of these deaths are preventable, describing the situation as a tragedy often overlooked by the public. Nacro is calling for government intervention to implement preventative measures in the crucial weeks before and after a prisoner's release.
The Ministry of Justice acknowledged the challenges and stated that support is provided, including up to 12 weeks of accommodation and NHS-backed drug treatment programs. They also highlighted a £700 million funding increase for probation and community services, alongside the recruitment of 1,300 new officers.
