Harry & Stars Appeal High Court Ruling
6 Nov
Summary
- Prince Harry and other celebrities are challenging a High Court decision.
- They lost a privacy case concerning unlawful information gathering claims.
- Joint legal costs could reach up to £34.5 million.
High-profile individuals, including Prince Harry and Sir Elton John, have filed applications with the Court of Appeal. This move seeks permission to challenge a recent High Court judgment that dismissed their privacy claims against a publisher.
The group, which also includes Elizabeth Hurley, David Furnish, Sadie Frost, and Baroness Lawrence, failed to prove allegations of unlawful information gathering. This ruling in July led to a significant order for joint legal costs, potentially reaching £34.5 million.
Lawyers for the claimants stated that the decisions were respectfully disagreed with, citing them as legally and factually flawed. The initial High Court ruling dismissed all allegations after an 11-week trial in London.
A subsequent ruling in August ordered the claimants to pay an initial £9.54 million towards legal costs, with the final sum to be calculated later. This indemnity costs order was also part of the challenge.
