The victim, Eliza Morales, was discovered with apparent sharp force trauma shortly before firefighters arrived at the scene Monday evening. The DuPage County Arson Task Force and state fire officials are involved.
Family members believe Morales was attacked while cooking dinner and that food left on the stove after the assault started the fire. She was six months pregnant and described by relatives as a kind person who leaves behind a husband and a young daughter. A person of interest is currently in custody, but no charges have been filed as the investigation continues.
The fire displaced some residents of the apartment building on Ogden Avenue. The DuPage County Coroner's Office will determine the official cause of death. Police are asking for anyone with information to contact the Downers Grove Police Department.
