Prayagraj Jails Launch Psychological Support Program
6 Nov
Summary
- Psychological counseling services to be introduced in Prayagraj division jails.
- Trained psychologists will conduct weekly two-hour sessions for inmates.
- Initiative aims to address depression, anxiety, and emotional distress among prisoners.
In response to rising mental health concerns among prison inmates, the Department of Prisons is set to implement psychological counseling services across jails in the Prayagraj division. This program will encompass facilities such as Naini Central Jail and district jails in Prayagraj, Kaushambi, and Pratapgarh.
Trained psychologists will be deployed to conduct weekly two-hour sessions. These sessions are designed to assist inmates in managing emotional and psychological stress stemming from extended periods of separation from family and society, which can lead to depression and anxiety.
The counseling services are expected to commence soon, with Pratapgarh district jail scheduled to be the first. The appointment of counselors for other jails, including Naini Central Jail, is in its final stages, with sessions anticipated to begin next month in Kaushambi.
Senior officials highlighted that a significant number of inmates, especially older ones, suffer from depression and anxiety. The program seeks to provide vital emotional support and coping mechanisms to improve overall well-being and prevent extreme distress or abnormal behavior.
