Pope Addresses Prison Crisis During Holy Year Mass

Pope Leo XIV recently officiated a special Mass for prisoners, guards, and their families, serving as the concluding event of the Vatican's 2025 Holy Year. During his homily, he critically addressed the pervasive issues of prison overcrowding and the lack of robust rehabilitation programs, emphasizing the need for charity and forgiveness towards inmates and staff.

This Mass brought together an estimated 6,000 participants, including inmates with special permission, prison volunteers, and officials from numerous countries. It highlighted the ongoing challenges within correctional facilities, particularly in Italy, where prisons operate significantly over capacity and complaints of mistreatment have increased.

The event served as the final major gathering of the Holy Year, initiated by Pope Francis with a message of hope for society's marginalized. Pope Leo XIV recalled Pope Francis's previous efforts to minister to prisoners, including opening a Holy Door at a Roman prison, and his call for pardons as part of Jubilee traditions.
