Cop Demands Bribe from Usher: SHRC Orders Compensation
20 Nov
Summary
- Woman receives 2 lakh compensation for police harassment.
- Officer Nithya alias Vasuki was sexually harassed by constable.
- SHRC ordered disciplinary action against the officer.

The State Human Rights Commission (SHRC) has directed the Tamil Nadu government to award 2 lakh rupees to a woman who endured sexual harassment from a police writer at Sakkottai Police Station. The commission further ordered the initiation of disciplinary proceedings against the officer, A Mayavadharan, and directed that the compensation be recovered from his personal finances.
The ruling followed a complaint lodged by N Nithya, who alleged that the constable threatened her with charges under the Immoral Traffic Act. He purportedly demanded 45,000 and coerced her into complying with his demands. The commission found no evidence to support the officer's claim that he was acting under official instructions.
SHRC concluded that the officer's actions constituted a violation of human rights and dignity, as he lacked the authority to conduct an inquiry without an FIR. While one complaint was upheld, another from P Yashini alias Hamsaleka was dismissed due to insufficient independent evidence.
