Police Caught Faking Work From Home
8 Mar
Summary
- Over 50 staff sacked for faking work using keystroke software.
- Some employees used weights to keep devices active at home.
- Working from home is now banned at Greater Manchester Police.

More than 50 police officers and civilian employees have been dismissed or forced to resign over the past three years due to faking keyboard activity while working from home. These individuals employed tactics such as repeatedly pressing keys or using objects like staplers and drink cans to simulate work. Anti-corruption investigators detected this 'key jamming' using software that monitors unusual keyboard patterns.
Greater Manchester Police identified 28 staff members involved in this scam. Chief Constable Stephen Watson has subsequently banned working from home for all staff as investigations continue. An insider revealed that some employees used weights on their keyboards to appear busy while spending time at the gym. This practice has led to dismissals and resignations across 14 police forces, though the full extent may be larger as the Metropolitan Police could not provide data due to cost constraints.
