Police Officers Guard Firefighters on Bonfire Night
5 Nov
Summary
- Police officers will be embedded in fire stations for Bonfire Night.
- Operation Moonbeam is Scotland's largest police operation since 2025.
- Fireworks Control Zones have increased to 18 across Scotland.
In response to escalating safety concerns, police officers are being embedded in fire stations across Scotland for the upcoming Bonfire Night. This strategic deployment, a key component of "Operation Moonbeam," Scotland's most extensive police operation since the 2025 presidential visit, aims to safeguard emergency crews. This year, up to 1,700 officers may be deployed to manage fireworks-related disorder, a Europa League match, and potential protests in Glasgow.
Operation Amberlight will see police officers based at 10 fire stations in Glasgow and its environs, providing immediate support to fire service colleagues who face potential attacks. This initiative is a direct response to an upsurge in disorder, which injured 62 officers in 2023. The expansion of Fireworks Control Zones (FCZs) from 12 to 18 across Scotland is also intended to reduce anti-social behaviour and ensure public safety.
The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service (SFRS) has reported an increase in organised displays, with 79 planned following 20 such events in the preceding five days. Despite a decrease in calls last year, serious incidents, including a firework landing near a pram in Glasgow, highlight ongoing risks. Animal welfare organisations continue to advocate for stricter fireworks regulations, urging public mindfulness of the distress caused to pets and wildlife.
