A police investigation into an attack by Valdo Calocane was dropped after just two weeks, as revealed during a public inquiry. Sgt Katie Sparks acknowledged that further details could have been pursued and that the crime was wrongly classified as actual bodily harm instead of grievous bodily harm.
In May 2020, Calocane, who suffered from paranoid schizophrenia, attacked a woman in Nottingham. The victim fractured vertebrae after leaping from a 10ft window to escape him. She later told the inquiry that police advised her Calocane had been sectioned but could not be jailed due to his mental health.
This attack occurred three years before Calocane fatally stabbed Barnaby Webber, Grace O'Malley-Kumar, and Ian Coates in the city. He subsequently received an indefinite hospital order after admitting to manslaughter on the grounds of diminished responsibility.
