Pharma Drug Busts Expose City's Growing Addiction Crisis
15 Feb
Summary
- Seizures of lorazepam and nitrazepam injections and tablets reported.
- Peddlers allegedly source drugs, including MDMA, from Bengaluru.
- Abuse of these prescription drugs can lead to serious health issues.

Concerns over the ongoing drug problem in the city have intensified following multiple seizures of prescription drugs with hypnotic qualities. In two separate incidents on February 11 and February 13, 2026, authorities confiscated suspected lorazepam injections and nitrazepam tablets from alleged peddlers.
These pharmaceutical drugs, belonging to the Benzodiazepine category, are typically prescribed for anxiety and insomnia but can cause severe health disorders with abuse. Officials suspect that peddlers are sourcing these drugs, along with others like MDMA, from Bengaluru due to their easier availability and lower cost. The perceived lesser legal consequences compared to other synthetic drugs may also be contributing to their appeal among users and dealers.
Authorities have alerted medical shops to report suspicious purchases or dubious prescriptions for these drugs. Last year, significant quantities of nitrazepam and lorazepam were seized across the district by both Excise and police departments, underscoring the scale of the issue.
