A violent road rage incident has resulted in a suspended sentence for Christopher Shaw, 40, who attacked a 69-year-old pensioner, Christopher Lavis, for obeying the 20mph speed limit. The assault occurred on July 30, last year, in Brynmeyn, Bridgend, when Shaw punched Mr. Lavis, causing a fractured right cheekbone and eye socket, a broken nose, and concussion.
Recorder Paul Lewis KC suspended Shaw's one-year sentence for 24 months, citing his roofing business and family responsibilities, alongside his early guilty plea. Shaw was also ordered to complete 50 hours of unpaid work and pay £1,500 in compensation to Mr. Lavis.
Mr. Lavis, who has not driven since the attack due to anxiety, described his profound disappointment with the outcome. He believes that such violence should warrant custodial time, regardless of the offender's employment status. The victim's wife witnessed the traumatic event, which has significantly impacted his quality of life, leaving him with balance issues and post-concussion syndrome.
Shaw, who had initially claimed self-defence, later admitted to assault causing actual bodily harm. The attack reportedly stemmed from Mr. Lavis slowing down to let oncoming traffic pass, an act that seemed to provoke Shaw's aggressive response.
