- He died from a metal pellet to the heart in February 2023.
- The accused suffered from post-traumatic stress disorder.

In Galashiels, a court heard that Simone Ramage, 40, has been found unfit to stand trial for health reasons following the death of her partner, Brian Kowbel, 40. Kowbel died in February 2023 from a metal pellet to his heart, sustained from an air gun. The incident took place at their home and was witnessed by three of Kowbel's children.
A court determined Ramage is suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), rendering her unfit for trial. This finding, concerning events from February 17, 2023, could not be reported until now due to legal restrictions. An examination of facts is currently underway to determine Ramage's responsibility for Kowbel's death.
Evidence presented includes a recorded interview where Kowbel's daughter stated Ramage intended to 'give him a fright' and 'shoot past him'. The prosecution alleges Ramage possessed an air rifle without a certificate and recklessly discharged it, striking Kowbel. Ramage reportedly called 999 and administered CPR after the incident.
