Absconding Murderers Caught After Years on Parole
30 Jul
Summary
- Murder convicts failed to return after Covid-19 parole release.
- Court orders immediate custody for parole absconders.
- Prison superintendent summoned over inaction on parole violators.
The Nagpur bench of the Bombay high court issued a stern order for the immediate custody of murder convicts who failed to surrender after their parole expired during the Covid-19 pandemic. This directive came after it was revealed that several convicts had remained absconding for up to six years.
The court expressed serious concern over the apparent inaction by prison authorities, summoning the superintendent of Central Prison, Amravati, to personally explain the lack of measures against parole violators. This action was taken while hearing criminal appeals from twelve convicts convicted in a 2020 murder case.
Of the appellants, nine were released on parole between 2020 and 2025 but did not return to prison. While eight have since surrendered, one individual, Sumit Mahadeo Meshram, initially failed to appear and faced non-bailable warrants before eventually surrendering. The court also noted procedural issues, recording additional statements of appellants regarding crucial forensic evidence.
Several appellants contested the evidence, with some claiming police planted evidence. The appeals against their convictions will proceed after these additional proceedings are completed, ensuring all parties have had the opportunity to address incriminating evidence.
