13 Feb
Summary
- Toddler Omra Wali Jan died aged two after severe abuse and shaking.
- Mother Morsal Mohammed Naim jailed for nine years, father for six.
- Parents admitted child cruelty; mother pleaded guilty to manslaughter.

Omra Wali Jan, a two-year-old girl, tragically died on February 9, 2024, after suffering extreme abuse and a forceful shake from her mother. Her parents, Morsal Mohammed Naim and Firooz Wali Jan, both 32, have been sentenced for their roles in the child cruelty.
Naim was jailed for nine years after pleading guilty to manslaughter, while Wali Jan received six years and nine months for child cruelty. The judge described their behavior as sadistic and noted multiple incidents of serious cruelty against the toddler over several weeks.
Evidence from Naim's phone revealed injuries including burns and bruises. The final attack occurred on November 30, 2023, when Naim falsely claimed Omra had choked. Paramedics revived the unconscious child, but a CT scan revealed severe brain and retinal injuries. The court heard both parents lied about the extent of the abuse and failed to seek medical attention, enabling each other's complicity.
Detective Constable Philip Reade expressed the investigation team's deep sadness, highlighting that Omra's last months were miserable, spent being hurt by those meant to protect her. The team welcomed the custodial sentences, acknowledging the parents' neglect and attempts to mislead the investigation.
