Prosecutors in Italy are pursuing charges against the parents of a nine-year-old girl who allegedly contracted HIV and was deprived of essential medical care for years. The mother reportedly concealed her HIV-positive status during pregnancy, traveling to Spain in 2017 to give birth outside of any medical establishment. Upon returning to Italy, the couple allegedly did not seek medical attention for their daughter for six years.
Their daughter was only brought to a doctor in July 2023 after experiencing a persistent fever and cough. Medical examination revealed she was malnourished and had difficulty walking. The doctor's recommendation for immediate hospitalization was met with parental reluctance. It was during hospitalization that her HIV condition was diagnosed.
The parents deny opposing medical treatments and claim their travel to Spain was for family reasons. They state their child received medical care in Spain until 2019. However, they only registered her with a private doctor in Bologna in 2022. A hearing in May will determine if the parents intended harm.
