Parents Charged After Baby's Death, Father Blames 'Satan'

A 2-month-old infant, Aida Mikea Monzon Alvarado, has died from what authorities describe as severe head and brain trauma. Her parents, Oscar Pineda and Katerin Monzon-Alvarado, both 21, have been arrested and charged with child abuse, assault, and reckless endangerment. These charges could lead to a maximum of 55 years in prison, with potential homicide charges pending the autopsy results.

The baby was admitted to Harbor Hospital with significant bruising and later diagnosed with multiple skull fractures and frontal lobe hemorrhaging. The father reportedly attributed the injuries to supernatural forces, specifically stating 'Satan slamming a door on the child.' The mother's explanation involved a fall from a bed, which prosecutors contend does not account for the extent of the trauma.

Both parents admitted to noticing the baby's bruises on September 6 and that she began vomiting the next day, but they delayed seeking medical attention until she became unresponsive on Wednesday. As Guatemalan nationals, prosecutors have raised concerns about their flight risk. The investigation is ongoing, with the possibility of additional charges.
