Summary

- He collapsed in his cell due to a brain bleed.
- Glendenning was jailed for abuse against girls in the 1970s.

A former police officer, James Glendenning, who committed sexual abuse against young girls in the 1970s, died in his prison cell at HMP Manchester, also known as Strangeways. He was 93 years old at the time of his death on Sunday, October 29, 2023, after collapsing in his cell. An inquest heard that Glendenning suffered a spontaneous bleed on the brain, a condition exacerbated by his vascular dementia.
Glendenning had been jailed in November 2018, at the age of 88, for 23 years after being convicted of rape and numerous indecent assault charges against two girls. During his trial, the court heard horrific details of his "utterly depraved and utterly wicked" abuse. The coroner recorded a verdict of death by natural causes, attributing his demise to a non-survivable brain bleed, likely spontaneous in origin due to his medical condition.
