Owl Sanctuary Founder Loses OBE After Bird Cruelty
7 Mar
Summary
- Founder of owl sanctuary banned from keeping birds.
- OBE awarded in 2001 will be cancelled by the King.
- Sanctuary found owls with neurological problems and fractures.

Paul Rose, the founder of an owl sanctuary in Cumbria, will be stripped of his OBE. This decision comes after he was banned from keeping birds for five years. Rose had admitted to causing unnecessary suffering to protected animals and failing to ensure animal welfare.
In March 2022, authorities found two tawny owls with neurological issues and a barn owl with a fractured wing at his sanctuary. These birds sadly had to be euthanized. Consequently, Rose received a suspended jail sentence and a curfew.
The King has now approved the cancellation of the OBE, which was initially awarded to Rose in December 2001. The ban on owning, keeping, or transporting birds remains in effect.
