They found a total of 206 animals, including cats, dogs, parrots, roosters, hedgehogs, chinchillas, guinea pigs, voles, and flying squirrels, living in severely overcrowded and unsanitary conditions.
The residence was described as a "hoarding situation," infested with insects and cluttered with debris, garbage, and household waste, making certain areas impassable. Authorities also discovered a 95-year-old woman who was essentially trapped in her room due to the excessive clutter.
The 57-year-old wildlife rehabilitator and a 61-year-old man who lived at the home have been charged with animal cruelty. The rehabilitator also faces a count of endangering the welfare of a vulnerable elderly person. The 95-year-old woman was removed from the home, but her current condition has not been disclosed.
Suffolk County Police Commissioner Kevin Catalina described the level of neglect as "unconscionable," as the animals were found to be in poor condition and living in squalor. Many of the animals have since been placed under veterinary care to address their serious medical issues.
