App Scam: Rs 99,000 Vanishes in Fake Car Rental

In a concerning incident from Belagavi, a man was defrauded of Rs 99,000 through a fake online car rental booking. Sanjeev Mutteppagol, an employee at the regional commissioner's office, sought to rent a car on March 27. He contacted an individual named Neelam Rajput from Lakshmi Car Rental Goa, who quoted Rs 800 for a trip to the airport.

The scammer then directed Mutteppagol to download an app named 'Car Rental' and subsequently asked him to share his mobile screen via Google Meet under the guise of assisting with the installation. This allowed the fraudster to gain unauthorized access to his mobile device and banking details.

Following this breach, the cybercriminals siphoned Rs 99,000 from Mutteppagol's account without his knowledge or consent. A case has been registered at the Belagavi City CEN police station, and authorities are conducting further investigations into the sophisticated online fraud.
