The Oneida County Sheriff's Office has introduced its newest recruit, Billie, a highly capable K9 patrol officer. Billie, a one-year-old English black Labrador retriever, was born in the Netherlands on July 4th of last year and is now assigned to handler Deputy Thomas Bronson.
Billie specializes in electronics storage detection, trained to find cell phones, tablets, laptops, USB drives, and SD cards. Her unique ability stems from detecting Triphenylhosphine Oxide (TPPO), a chemical present in all electronic devices. She is also undergoing training for tracking lost or missing individuals.
Her capabilities were recently demonstrated during a multi-county operation. Billie successfully sniffed out three cell phones containing crucial evidence that led to the apprehension of a sexual predator. This vital contribution helped secure the individual, who was on parole for a previous offense, back in jail.
Funding for Billie was provided by WB Payne Co., Inc. and Tolpa's Auto Parts, both based in Oneida County. In recognition of their support, the sheriff's office presented both businesses with plaques.
