Tragedy struck a Columbus, Ohio neighborhood on New Year's Eve with the death of 3-year-old Cassidy Sakoulos. Police responded to a report of an unresponsive child shortly after 5:30 p.m. on December 31st. Emergency services arrived at the scene and attempted to save the young girl.
Cassidy was pronounced dead at Nationwide Children's Hospital approximately thirty minutes after the initial response. Her mother, 41-year-old Sharon Sakoulos, was present at the home and reportedly displayed an unusual calmness during the unfolding events. Neighbors noted her stoic demeanor as officers worked to save her daughter.
Following an investigation and autopsy, authorities classified Cassidy's death as a homicide motivated by domestic violence. Sharon Sakoulos allegedly confessed to the crime, stating her intention to kill her daughter by suffocation. She was arrested and booked into Franklin County Jail on suspicion of murder, with bail set at $2 million.
