Nicko Matthews-Cooper, 24, has been sentenced to life in prison with the possibility of parole after 27 years for a murder conviction. The sentence stems from a shooting incident in December 2024, where 21-year-old Kaelan Amerson was fatally shot multiple times in Jefferson Township.
Deputies discovered Amerson near Licking Heights West Elementary School following an apparent drug transaction involving Amerson and four others. Investigators stated Matthews-Cooper attempted to rob Amerson after the deal, discharging his firearm into Amerson's vehicle.
Amerson sustained upper body wounds but managed to drive away. Two other individuals present also suffered minor injuries. A jury acquitted Matthews-Cooper of aggravated robbery and murder charges.
