A British Army officer, Lieutenant Colonel Mark Teeton, recounted a harrowing street attack in Chatham, stating his assailant aimed to decapitate him, echoing the Lee Rigby murder. He sustained numerous stab wounds to his neck and body during the July 23, 2024 incident.
Lt Col Teeton, a veteran of Iraq and Afghanistan, expressed immense gratitude to his wife and strangers who intervened, saving his life. He described being left deeply wary of others approaching him following the "vicious and deliberate" attack.
The perpetrator, Anthony Esan, 25, pleaded guilty to attempted murder and possession of bladed weapons. Court documents revealed Esan had conducted online searches for knives and researched the Lee Rigby terrorist attack.
Esan had made multiple unsuccessful attempts to join the British Army, being rejected due to medical reasons including "psychotic disorder" and eczema. The attack occurred as Lt Col Teeton was walking home from Brompton Barracks.
