- The student's family alleged murder, citing resentment over complexion.

An Odisha administrative service officer, Bhimsen Prasad Tudu, was arrested on Friday night in the Mayurbhanj district. He is accused in connection with the death of Chandrika Hembram, a third-year MBBS student whose body was discovered floating in the Kathajodi River on June 4. Hembram's family has contested initial findings of suicide by drowning, alleging a planned murder fueled by Tudu's resentment.
The victim's family stated that Hembram and Tudu had a 14-year relationship and planned to marry in 2027. However, they claim Tudu distanced himself after joining the Odisha Administrative Service and harbored resentment, reportedly making remarks about Hembram's complexion. The family also noted Hembram underwent cosmetic treatment while Tudu allegedly pursued another relationship.
Following a complaint by Hembram's mother, police initiated a thorough investigation, utilizing forensic and cyber forensic techniques. Examination of electronic devices, chat records, and a personal diary of both the victim and the accused has provided digital evidence against Tudu. A deputy commissioner of police indicated that Tudu's non-cooperation and attempts to evade arrest further solidified the case against him.
