Ocean Ramsey, renowned for swimming with great white sharks, is denying allegations of workplace abuse leveled by former employees of her company, One Ocean Diving.
Several women who previously worked for the Oahu-based company have come forward, alleging unpaid training, yelling, and physical intimidation. One former employee, Jenna Konyok, reported being grabbed during a freedive and forced to go beyond her comfort level. Taylor Cunningham, another ex-worker, detailed claims of screaming, shoving, and bruising from Ramsey.
Ramsey has vehemently denied these claims, asserting that all physical contact in the water was strictly for safety reasons and that she has never verbally or physically abused anyone. She explained that loud noises in the water can be amplified and that she may have guided, pushed, or pulled individuals to prevent accidents.
Regarding compensation, Ramsey stated that pay varied based on training, skills, and progress, and that a month-long challenge was optional. The company, run with her husband Juan Oliphant, has acknowledged the dangerous nature of the job and plans to pay trainees while discontinuing noncompete agreements for new hires.
These allegations surface within a larger context of an investigation into harassment within the diving and ocean tourism industry, with a recent survey indicating significant rates of reported sexual harassment. One Ocean Diving has stated it condemns sexual abuse and maintains a zero-tolerance policy.
