New video released by Oak Park police captures a violent encounter that led to an officer-involved shooting on Sunday, May 31st. Footage shows police pulling over Christian Wallace, 38, at a gas station near the Chicago border. During a pat-down, the officer discovered a gun concealed on Wallace.
A prolonged struggle for control of the weapon ensued, lasting over a minute. During the altercation, the officer's body camera detached. The dashcam also recorded parts of the fight. Wallace eventually regained control of the firearm before the officer discharged their weapon.
Wallace was transported to Loyola Medical Center, where he died from his injuries approximately one hour after the shooting. The involved officer also received treatment for injuries sustained during the struggle at the same medical facility and was later released. The officer remains on medical leave.
