A 33-year-old NYPD detective, Jose Mercedes, is recovering at home after being repeatedly stabbed and slashed during an off-duty robbery in the Bronx.
Mercedes, a 10-year veteran of the force, was reportedly cleaning his car trunk on October 2 when two individuals allegedly attacked him, attempting to steal his gold chain. He fought back, sustaining at least seven stab wounds to his neck and leg before the suspects forcibly took his chain and fled on a motorized bike.
The suspects, identified by authorities as D'Angelo Caraballo, 25, and Sneider Mejia, 24, were later apprehended. Federal authorities identified them as illegal migrants from the Dominican Republic. They were located hiding in a basement in Lynn, Massachusetts, and taken into custody by U.S. Marshals.
Caraballo is accused of wielding the knife, while Mejia allegedly operated the getaway bike. Both are currently being held without bail in Massachusetts and are expected to be extradited to New York City to face attempted murder charges.
