An 83-year-old veteran, identified as Richard Williams, died on March 17 after being violently pushed onto subway tracks in New York City earlier that month. The incident occurred on March 8 at the Lexington Avenue-63rd Street station. Prosecutors stated Bairon Hernandez, 30, first shoved another man onto the tracks before pushing Williams from behind.
Williams suffered a brain bleed and never regained consciousness. The other victim sustained a shoulder injury but was hospitalized in stable condition. Hernandez, a native of Honduras, has been indicted on charges including second-degree murder and attempted assault. He pleaded not guilty to the charges on March 30.
Department of Homeland Security has requested Hernandez be held in custody due to his criminal record and previous deportations. He has 15 prior charges, including assault and drug offenses, and has been deported four times since first entering the U.S. in 2008.
