Mystery Manhole Exits Baffle NYC

New York City authorities are investigating a series of unusual incidents involving individuals emerging from manholes. Most recently, three people were seen exiting a manhole near Penn Station in Manhattan early Tuesday morning. Video captured the group, equipped with headlamps and overalls, quickly departing the scene. This follows several similar occurrences reported earlier in the summer, primarily in Brooklyn, where groups were observed entering and exiting sewer systems at odd hours. The NYPD investigated these past instances, confirming no immediate public threat but inspecting the sewer systems afterward. The motivations behind these clandestine underground journeys are not yet clear. One theory suggested that individuals might be searching for valuables, as previously reported by NBC New York. However, the Department of Environmental Protection stresses that the city's vast 7,400-mile sewer network presents severe risks. These include exposure to noxious gases, unstable ground, potential flooding, and the dangers of confined spaces, making such entries illegal and extremely hazardous.
