US Judge Dismisses Murder Charges in CEO Killing
30 Jan
Summary
- Murder and weapons charges dropped against alleged CEO killer.
- The accused, Luigi Mangione, still faces stalking charges.
- The judge cited legal incompatibility between charges.

In a significant development, a New York federal judge on Friday dismissed murder and weapons charges against Luigi Mangione, who is accused of killing the CEO of UnitedHealthcare. This ruling removes the possibility of the death penalty for Mangione. The accused had previously pleaded not guilty to murder, weapons, and stalking charges.
U.S. District Judge Margaret M. Garnett in Manhattan stated that the murder and weapons charges were legally incompatible with the two stalking counts Mangione faces. Jury selection for the stalking charges was slated to begin in September. Mangione also faces separate murder, weapons, and forgery charges in a Manhattan state court, where no trial date has yet been set. Despite the condemnation of the killing by public officials, Mangione has, for some, become a folk hero figure amid discussions about high healthcare costs.
