Seniors Attacked: How Did Abuser Access Nursing Home?
6 Mar
Summary
- An alleged abuser accessed a nursing home for 25 days, targeting 15 seniors.
- New Brunswick has no specific regulations for security cameras in nursing homes.
- Calls are mounting for a provincewide security review of all long-term care facilities.
An investigation into alleged sexual assaults against 15 seniors at a New Brunswick nursing home has revealed significant security concerns. The accused, a 69-year-old man described as a family member of a resident, allegedly committed the offenses over 25 days. This incident has prompted widespread calls for a thorough review of security measures in all long-term care facilities across the province.
New Brunswick's Department of Social Development confirmed that while nursing homes must adhere to various safety regulations, there are no specific mandates regarding the use of security cameras. This lack of specific security oversight has left families questioning the safety of their loved ones in vulnerable care settings. The alleged assaults occurred at Loch Lomond Villa's The Village, a 100-bed facility, with victims aged between their 70s and 90s.
In response to the allegations, Loch Lomond Villa stated that security cameras, key-card access, and controlled door locking systems were already in place prior to the incident. An on-site security guard has since been added outside of reception hours. However, officials and opposition critics are pushing for broader, provincewide improvements, including enhanced staffing, supervision standards, and more rigorous background checks for all personnel.
Legislators are urging for a transparent review to identify and address any systemic failures that may have allowed such offenses to occur. The goal is to implement clear, strong guidelines to ensure the safety and protection of the most vulnerable residents in New Brunswick's 79 licensed nursing homes and numerous adult residential facilities.
