Nurse Banned for Smuggling Phone into Prison
9 Feb
Summary
- Nurse Kimberley Finn was struck off for her role in a prison smuggling conspiracy.
- She pleaded guilty to conspiracy to convey prohibited articles into prison.
- The Nursing and Midwifery Council found her actions brought the profession into disrepute.

A former nurse has been removed from the professional register following her conviction for smuggling a phone into HMP Durham. Kimberley Finn, who was employed on an agency basis, admitted to a conspiracy charge involving the introduction of banned items into a prison. She received a nine-month suspended sentence in January 2025 for her role.
The incident came to light in August 2022 when a search at HMP Northumberland uncovered a phone containing discussions about drugs and contraband. Finn's conviction stemmed from her admitting to a conspiracy that involved passing a package containing a phone to a prisoner, who was intended to pass it to another inmate.
The Nursing and Midwifery Council panel concluded that Finn's actions, which included significant breaches of trust, constituted misconduct. They found that maintaining public confidence in the nursing profession necessitated removing her from practice. The panel acknowledged Finn's guilty plea and early admissions but deemed that anything less than a striking-off order would be insufficient to address public interest concerns.
