Rebecca Burwood, a registered adult nursing specialist since 2002, has been permanently removed from the nursing register following a sustained period of financial misconduct. Between 2017 and 2023, Ms. Burwood exploited a vulnerable 99-year-old resident, known as Resident A, who had become isolated after a fall.
Ms. Burwood manipulated Resident A's trust, eventually coercing her into transferring her £400,000 home to the nurse. The tribunal found that Ms. Burwood also withdrew over £160,000 in cash and used the resident's funds for significant personal expenses, including a home extension, a car, and a campervan.
Over the five-year period, Ms. Burwood amassed approximately £770,000 from Resident A. Allegations suggest some funds were used for cosmetic surgery. Following a police investigation initiated in March 2023, the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) deemed Ms. Burwood's actions to be serious misconduct, leading to her striking off.
Resident A, who had since passed away, reportedly did not wish to press charges, believing Ms. Burwood had learned from her mistakes. However, the NMC panel concluded that Ms. Burwood's conduct was a sustained, calculated effort to exploit a lonely and dependent individual, resulting in the proportionate sanction of removal from the register.
