In a shocking case of betrayal, a nurse named Rexy Reyes has been jailed for 18 months for stealing £6,500 from an elderly dementia patient under his care. Reyes, who worked at Nottingham's Queen's Medical Centre, took the victim's bank card from a locker he had access to and then "maxed out" the withdrawals over 22 consecutive days.
The 52-year-old nurse was found guilty of two counts of theft following a three-day trial. In a victim impact statement, the victim's nephew said the crime has "shaken his confidence in the health service." The patient, who was in her 70s, has since passed away.
Jailing Reyes, Judge James Sampson described the offense as "mean" and "motivated by greed," stating that Reyes "deliberately targeted his vulnerable victim." The judge emphasized that Reyes' actions have led to a loss of public trust in the nursing profession, whose sole purpose is to care for those in need.
