NSW Streets Not For Criminals: Police Minister Vows Action

New South Wales Police Minister Yasmin Catley has firmly stated that the state's streets will not be yielded to organized criminals. This declaration comes amidst a concerning rise in violence, with as many as six suspected mistaken identity shootings occurring since the start of last year. Two of these incidents resulted in fatalities within a 48-hour period, both under investigation as mistaken identity killings by organized crime groups. One victim was a 23-year-old university student shot in his bed, while another was reportedly shot outside the home of a suspected underworld figure. Catley insisted that the police possess the necessary resources to confront organized crime and does not believe the situation is out of control.

NSW Police Commissioner Mal Lanyon indicated that a significant portion of these organized crime offenses are directed from overseas, though onshore facilitators are involved in group coordination. He expressed deep concern over the increasing recruitment of young, inexperienced individuals to carry out domestic offenses. These recruits, often motivated by small sums of money and using encrypted communications, face severe legal consequences upon apprehension. A task force targeting gang violence has made 800 arrests in the past year, yet the recruitment of vulnerable youth by organized crime groups remains a critical issue being addressed by the government.
