Threats Escalate in Nolan Wells Investigation
5 Aug
Summary
- Third arrest made in connection with Nolan Wells' disappearance.
- Suspect charged with interstate transmission of threatening communications.
- Race and defamation claims surface as case intensifies.

The investigation into the death of Nolan Wells, a Black teenager, has seen a third arrest. Edward James Porter, from Berwyn, Illinois, was charged with transmitting threatening communications across state lines. Porter allegedly threatened witnesses and their families on July 31, according to court documents.
This arrest follows two others: Joseph Alfredo Vasquez Dumarce, accused of threatening a judge's stepmother, and Michelle Francine Edwards, charged with making bomb threats to Mississippi government offices. It remains unclear if any of the arrested individuals have legal representation.
Amidst the intensifying case, claims have emerged suggesting race played a role in the handling of Wells' death. His friends, who are white, have reportedly been targeted with death threats and defamation. A fundraiser has been launched to support their legal defense against slander.
Wells' friends maintain he chose to stay on Horn Island with an unidentified female. However, his parents dispute this, hiring civil rights attorney Ben Crump to conduct an independent investigation. The family is expected to pursue legal action, while the friends have retained attorneys. The official autopsy results have not yet been released.
