A gripping new Netflix documentary, "The Crash," delves into the disturbing details of a fatal 2002 car incident in Strongsville, Ohio. The documentary examines how what initially appeared to be a tragic accident evolved into a murder investigation.
In the early morning of July 31, 2002, 17-year-old Mackenzie Shirilla was driving three young adults at approximately 100 miles per hour when the vehicle collided with a brick building. The crash claimed the lives of Dominic Russo, 20, and Davion Flanagan, 19, while Shirilla sustained severe injuries.
During a 2023 trial, prosecutors successfully argued that Shirilla intentionally crashed the car to cause the deaths of her passengers. Despite her claims of having no memory of the moments preceding the crash, she was convicted on multiple charges, including murder.
Shirilla was sentenced to two life-in-prison terms, to be served concurrently, for the aggravated vehicular homicide of Russo and Flanagan. The judge described her actions as "literal hell on wheels" and stated it was murder, not reckless driving, highlighting Shirilla's deliberate choices in route, time, and speed.
Shirilla is currently incarcerated at the Ohio Reformatory for Women in Marysville, Ohio, serving her sentence for the devastating events of that night.
