Florida AG Sues Netflix Over Data Deception

Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier has initiated legal action against Netflix, accusing the streaming service of deceptive practices concerning user data. A lawsuit filed on Wednesday alleges that Netflix misled Florida families by collecting extensive personal information, including data from minors.

The core of the complaint centers on Netflix's alleged breach of promises to its subscribers. The company had previously assured users that their subscriptions offered freedom from intrusive data collection and advertising. However, the lawsuit details how Netflix subsequently used this collected data to build and launch an advertising business, a move it had purportedly vowed never to undertake.

Attorney General Uthmeier stated that Netflix's claims of privacy were false, asserting that the company designed its product to keep children engaged and then monetized that engagement. This action comes after Florida previously sued TikTok and OpenAI over child safety and consumer protection concerns.

Netflix has responded by asserting its commitment to member privacy and compliance with data protection laws. The company stated that it has safeguards for children and that its privacy disclosures inform users about data usage. Netflix intends to contest the lawsuit vigorously, maintaining that the claims lack merit.
