6 Dec
Summary
- NCW issues suo moto notice to Punjab DGP for action report.
- Negligence by ASI Mangat Ram highlighted in tracing the victim.
- NCW urges fast-track court for day-to-day hearings.

The National Commission for Women (NCW) has announced it will issue a suo moto notice to the Director General of Police (DGP) of Punjab, Gaurav Yadav. This notice demands an action taken report within three days concerning the horrific sexual assault and murder of a 13-year-old girl in Jalandhar on November 22. The commission is advocating for accelerated judicial proceedings and a thorough inquiry into potential negligence.
An NCW team visited the victim's family, and the chairperson held a review meeting with Jalandhar officials. Concerns were raised about ASI Mangat Ram's failure to trace the girl despite searching the accused's house, where neighbours later found the body. This points to serious issues with the initial police response, prompting the NCW's intervention.
While ASI Mangat Ram has been dismissed for gross negligence, the NCW emphasizes the victim's mother's demand for stringent penalties against the accused and exemplary punishment for the ASI. The commission strongly urges the relevant fast-track court to hold daily hearings for a time-bound, fair, and swift trial.
